2027 GMC Terrain: Compact SUV Versatility for Vancouver Island
The 2027 GMC Terrain is compact enough to feel easy around town, but it does not feel small when life gets busy. There is room for five people, plenty of flexible cargo space and useful technology built right into the cabin. Add available trailering capability and a choice of three distinct trims, and the Terrain becomes the kind of SUV that can handle more than the weekday routine.
For 2027, GMC keeps the formula introduced with the latest Terrain generation and adds a few useful touches. The lineup includes Elevation, AT4 and Denali. Each one approaches the same SUV a little differently, from practical everyday comfort to a more adventurous setup or a more premium feel.
One Turbo Engine Keeps Things Nice and Simple

The 2027 Terrain uses a 1.5 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine. It produces 175 horsepower and 203 lb ft of torque and works with an eight speed automatic transmission on Canadian AWD models. The setup is designed for everyday driving rather than chasing big performance numbers.
All wheel drive is standard on the Canadian 2027 Elevation, AT4 and Denali pages. Elevation offers up to four selectable drive modes, including Normal, Snow and Ice, AWD and Off Road. Those settings give you a little more control when the road changes from dry pavement to loose surfaces or poor weather.
That flexibility makes sense for driving around Nanaimo, especially when a regular city trip turns into a weekend drive through wetter or rougher parts of Vancouver Island.
The AT4 Is Happy When the Pavement Gets Messy
The AT4 is the Terrain to look at if your weekends tend to involve gravel roads, muddy trailheads or outdoor gear. It comes standard with a lifted ride height, a front skid plate and steel underbody shield. Red front recovery hooks add some visual attitude while 17 inch dark machined aluminum wheels wear all terrain tires.
AT4 also gets its own Terrain drive mode. GMC says this mode is designed to help with low speed travel over rough surfaces. Up to six selectable drive modes are offered on the 2027 AT4, giving it more flexibility than the everyday focused Elevation.
You Can Bring a Little More Along
The Terrain gives you up to 1,798 litres of cargo volume behind the front row. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split, so you do not have to choose between taking a passenger and carrying longer gear. A rear underfloor storage compartment gives smaller items their own place instead of letting them roll around the cargo area.
When properly equipped with the available Trailering Package, the Terrain can tow up to 680 kg. The package can also be paired with an In Vehicle Trailering App. For 2027, GMC lists a new available trailer light test feature, which can make checking a connected trailer a little easier before setting off.
The Big Screen Comes Standard

You do not have to move far up the trim list to get the main technology. Elevation comes standard with a 15 inch Premium GMC Infotainment System touchscreen and an 11 inch Driver Information Centre. Google built in compatibility is also included, although subscriptions may be required for full functionality.
Those same large displays are also standard on AT4 and Denali. It means the basic cabin experience stays modern regardless of which personality you choose.
Available technology can go further. Technology Package II on Elevation can add HD Surround Vision, a Cabin Glance interior camera, Rear Camera Mirror, Rear Pedestrian Alert and Traffic Sign Recognition. These are useful upgrades if you want more help keeping track of what is happening around the SUV.
Elevation Keeps It Clean and Comfortable
Elevation is the straightforward member of the family. Standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are welcome on cold mornings. Its upright grille and LED lighting keep the exterior modern without going too far in either a rugged or luxury direction.
An available two tone roof in Ebony Twilight Metallic can give it a little more personality. The available AutoSense Power Liftgate is another useful touch. Walk up to the rear with the key fob and the liftgate can open without needing to put down whatever you are carrying.
Denali Turns Up the Comfort
Denali takes a noticeably more polished approach. Its signature Galvano chrome grille and additional chrome exterior accents make it easy to tell apart from the other trims. Standard 19 inch Midnight Silver machined face aluminum wheels add to that more upscale look.
Inside, Denali comes standard with heated and ventilated front seats plus heated rear outboard seats. It also includes a premium suspension, Hill Descent Control, HD Surround Vision and Rear Camera Mirror. Animated headlamps and taillamps add another distinctive detail once the lights come on.
Safety Is Not Saved for the Top Trim
The Terrain comes with more than 16 standard safety and driver assistance features across the 2027 lineup. One of them is Blind Zone Steering Assist. It can alert you and provide a brief steering input if the system detects a potential collision with a moving vehicle in the lane you are entering.
Forward Collision Alert can warn you when it detects a possible collision with a vehicle ahead. It can also provide a tailgating alert when you are following another vehicle too closely. These features are there to support an attentive driver rather than take over the driving task.
The previous 2026 Elevation was advertised with more than 15 standard safety and driver assistance technologies, including Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking. For 2027, GMC now describes the lineup as offering more than 16 standard safety and driver assistance features.
So, What Actually Changed for 2027?
The 2027 Terrain is more of a continuation than a ground up redesign. The latest Terrain generation had already brought its larger 15 inch infotainment screen, digital driver display and distinctive Elevation, AT4 and Denali personalities to the Canadian lineup.
For 2027, GMC continues that foundation while highlighting more than 16 standard safety and driver assistance features. GMC Canada also lists the new available trailer light test feature alongside the Terrain's available 680 kg towing capability. The core 1.5 litre turbo engine, eight speed automatic and practical two row layout remain familiar.
That is not necessarily a bad thing. The Terrain already covers the basics well, and the three trims give shoppers clear choices without turning the lineup into something difficult to understand.
Your Next Weekend Might Need a Terrain
The 2027 GMC Terrain works because it can be many things without becoming overly complicated. Elevation covers everyday comfort. AT4 adds useful equipment for rougher roads. Denali brings more luxury into the picture. All three keep the same practical size and flexible interior.
